Dartmouth 2007

Gaspé, Quebec Canada 26th of June 2007
Dartmouth River

26th June 2007. I had just finished a meeting in New York and was on my way to fish for Atlantic salmon in Gaspé, Quebec Canada. The plan was to fly to Montreal and then from there to Gaspé. Me and Joe have been talking about going somewhere else to fish for salmon and finally we where doing it.

Joe had found this outfitter in a fly fishing show in Charlotte NC last winter that owned a lodge in Gaspe. The lodge name was Malbaie and was about 30min driving from Gaspe. The owner Bill, told Joe that it was very good chance to catch a big salmon in June as that’s when the big fish run is (similar to Iceland). We where very excited to try something different but still on the Atlantic salmon. We where mostly interested to learn new techniques and to see if our Icelandic methods would work for the salmon in the Gaspe area.

I flew into Gaspé and landed about 12pm. Dalton from Malbaie outfitters was at the airport to meet me and take me to the river but Joe had flown in the day before and was already on the water. Dalton tells me that we where to fish on the Dartmouth today on section 7 where the "fence pool" is. There are fences in most rivers here in Gaspé that is a net fence to prevent the salmon to go all the way up the river. These fences where put in the rivers to prevent poaching but poaching were a big problem here 20+ years ago but by shortening the rivers it is easier to monitor them and protect them from poaching.

Lot of salmon fishermen stopped coming to Gaspé as the poaching was killing the rivers (as well as the fishing in the oceans out of Greenland). We heard stories of 60 salmon would be in a pool in the afternoon but only 1 the morning after. When I came to the river then Joe had been fishing for about 3 hours and only had a couple of chaises but no strike. We had lunch and i rigged up.
After lunch we fished three pools but with no success. The first day was to be a little disappointing but at least we saw fish and had a couple of chaises

The group that was fishing with us, from left, George from PA USA, Robert from NH USA, my self, Joe from NC USA, and Jody and Ted from MA USA.

The dinner every night was four course, started with fresh salad then soup, main course (steak or fish) and then desert. Great food and very good service.
