Sela 2008

29th of August 2009. Sela

We had left Svalbardsa around noon where we had tried to fish in the morning but the winds were super strong and almost impossible to get the fly out.

When we arrived in Sela the weather was perfect there. We started in section 3 (the top section) and fished Krokur and Arnarhylur. The only fish we caught that day where in Arnarhylur, mine at 8:53pm and Joe's at 9:03pm. The were both super small or around 1.5kg each! Both were released but should have been killed...

Joe with his small one from Arnarhylur.

30th of August.
Me and Joe had section 1 this morning and fished in Leifstadarhylur and Rettarhylur. This was the first Salmon of the day, about 77cm female, 4.8kg, taken on Snaelda, released.

Salmon #2 this morning. 75cm female, 4.4kg. Taken on Snaelda in Rettarhylur.

Last Salmon before lunch, 72cm 4.0kg Male, taken on Haugur micro hitch in Rettarhylur.

30th of August. We had section 2 this afternoon and started in Gusti. We saw a couple of Salmon there but no takers. Joe crossed and hitched it down from the other side.

After fishing in Krokur without any success we walked up above Krokur to scout it out.

Joe in Langistrengur, very nice looking pool but we saw no fish there and no fish in Dimmhylur (next pool above).

30th of August, heading down to Arnarhylur. Spectacular view!

Looking up to Skriduhylur, 77 and 78.

Me fishing in Arnarhylur.

31st of August.
We had section 3 this morning and started in Arnarhylur. There was quite a lot of Salmon in Arnarhylur and this one took the Haugur micro hitch. 74cm 4.4 kg.

Same female, in the water just before she got released.

Joe in 103 (we think). We saw two Salmon in there, right in the middle sitting right above a flat rock. One did move after Joe's hitch but his "PH" was very bad this year...(PH = "Premature hitchalation" is when you set the hitch to soon and the Salmon misses it...I think Joe lost at least 8 Salmon last year because of the PH syndrome. I think the cure would be to have him hitch blind folded so he does not see when the Salmon comes up and takes the fly...

31st of August.
We had section 1 this afternoon and fished Leifstadarhylur. Caught this one on the hitch, pretty small male 2kg.

This male took quite high up in the upper pool in Leifstadarhylur. I thought it was a much bigger fish when it took but it turned out to be a 78cm male, 5kg.

Just before he was released back into Leifstadarhylur.

1st of September 2008.
Last day of the trip and me and Joe had section 2. We started in Pottur and this 78cm 5kg female came out of there. Released.

After fishing in Pottur we walked up river to scout out the pools and stopped by Laekjarhylur. We had never fished this pool before but it looked quite good. I ran the hitch through there and just when I was half way through the pool I hooked a female that took me down to the pool bellow or Skaft. See the video of the fight bellow.
