North Platt WY 2010

Casper WY April 2010

We had such a great time here last year and caught a lot of big Rainbows, we simply had to go again. After flying to Denver you fly to Casper WY on a small jet and it takes about 45 min. It's a small cozy airport and I took a taxi to the Inn at Alcova. After checking in and gearing up I walked up to the honey hole that is about 1/2 mile down from the Alcova Dam.

There where about 4 guys there when I got there around 3 pm but they all had left around 4 so it was all mine. The weather was great but some wind blowing down river. They had turned the water down so it looked like it had dropped about 1-2 feet just about when I got there but around 5pm they turned it back on and it went up again...?

After catching two nice 5-6 pound Rainbows I started walking back to the lodge. I ordered pizza at Yolanda that would last me for 3 days...

John came in later that night and Brett was due to arrive tomorrow morning.

Day 2. 22nd of April 2010

We had reserved Rene's private section and stayed there all day. The weather was great and we all had pretty good day. It was kind of hard to sight fish to them since it was overcast but we had a pretty good idea where they would be.

Very nice 6-7 pound female, took the orange egg.

Overview video of Rene's section.

Nice view of Rene's private 1/2 mile stretch.

John fishing on the far-side of Rene's corner.

Tripple Play!

After fishing at Rene's all day we went up to the Honey Hole were we caught most of our fish last year (before we found out about Rene's...). It was already beer 30 for me but John and Brett fished until it got pretty dark but had no luck.

Day 3. 23nd of April 2010

We drove up to Fremont Canyon and fished the meadows until the afternoon. I had a 30+ fish day up there and the fly of the day was a black RS2.

My biggest fish of the day, around 6-7 pound female.

Brett giving it a try. I caught 10-15 fish out of this pool all but one on the RS2.

I caught few of this size in the Fremont Canyon...they are not all that long but check out the girth...

I mean...the head is tiny compared to the body...very strong fighters.

Later that day we did some exploration further up river. We found the trail down to the river just bellow Pathfinder Dam and fished there for couple of hours.

We caught few of those just bellow Pathfinder Dam.

After great day of fishing it's a win to have dinner at one of the local bars...They have awesome Double Cheeseburger Deluxe...(never figured out what the Deluxe was about but they sure tasted good!).

Day 4. 24th of April 2010

We sight fished at Rene's all day in a perfect conditions. Sunny and calm all day! We all caught lot of fish all ranging from 3-8 pounds.

Nice one! Taken on yellow egg. The flies that worked best at Rene's were, yellow, lime and light pink eggs, then the red Rock worm. I tried quite a bit the RS2 but it was not very successful.

Selection from Rene's section

John netting a nice one on the far side of Rene's property.

Just perfect evening! Sunny and calm.

Day 5. 25th of April 2010

This was our last day and we wanted to do some more exploration in the area. We wanted to see if we could get to the power plant were the water comes out from Fremont Canyon. This is the Power plant were the water comes into Alcova Reservoir but it's not very accessible...

We saw a couple of places were you might be able to walk down but we all agreed that it would be best to go there by boat. It does not look like you have a lot of room to move around down there and your fly would be in the rocks all the time. The fish further up at the Meadows in Fremont canyon may also be fish coming from the Alcova lake as we did not see anything that would stop fish from going through there (the river continues up the canyon to the right).

After our exploration we headed down to Rene's and got there around noon. We fished until around 4pm but then the weather had turned to the worse and it was down to 34f, windy and snowing...

My last fish of the trip. I caught around 4 fish this day and hooked another 2.

John with a nice male the last day.

Video of John fighting a nice one.

Brett with a nice one just before we stopped. As you can see then it had started snowing and the wind was blowing pretty hard.

I must say that the North Platt in WY in April is one of a kind. Lot of big rainbow that fight similar to Atlantic Salmon. I would not recommend less than 5 weight rods and prepare for 10-20 min fights. You will hook a lot of fish but a lot of them will also get away since the current is pretty strong and the flies are small. 3X leaders with 3X tippet all the way down is pretty much what you need and I still had 5-6 rigs broken of...

Enjoy!
